Most of what you do in Herdly will revolve around individual animals and will happen in the animal list. Here you can view your animals, look for a specific one, look at their history, and perform actions on them. For the most part you can do the same things on both computers and mobile devices, but the computer does allow you to see more information at the same time because of the screen size and offers a few extra features.
On a computer, go to Animals > Animal List to open the Animal List window.
Hold the shift key down when going to Animals > Animal List to open another Animal List window. This is useful when you want to compare or do multiple things at once. You can have as many Animal List windows open at the same time as you like.
By default, this window will list all of your current animals. You can use the Filter button to look for a particular set of animals based on any criteria Herdly keeps track of. See Filters for details. To find a specific animal, you can scroll through the list, but it is often faster to use the search field above the list to search for an animal based on its management tag. Type Command-F (Mac) or Control-F (Windows) to quickly go to the search field.
Selecting animals and sorting by different columns works as explained in the Data Entry Techniques topic. As you change the filter or use the search field, you'll see the status bar beneath the list update to show how many animals are displayed and selected. You can add, remove, and rearrange columns using the View button which is explained in the Changing the View topic. Workspaces remember your column and filter settings so you can quickly arrange the window as needed for a certain task. See Workspaces for more information on creating and using workspaces.
Probably the most important thing you'll do in this window is perform actions on animals. Some actions can only be performed on one animal at a time, but many of them can be performed on multiple animals at the same time. Select one or more animals in the list and then click the Actions button (or right-click an animal in the list). From here you can choose the action you want to perform. See Actions for more information about working with actions.
The Animal History action is often used to see all the information Herdly knows about an animal. Double-clicking an animal will show you its history.
The Print and Export buttons can be used to print or export the information currently in the window. See Printing and Exporting Data, respectively, for more information.
Child lists are very useful when you want to view additional information about an animal. To open a child list, click the Child List button and then choose which child list you want to open. The window will be split in half with the child list on the bottom. As you select animals in the main list, the child list will show information associated with the selected animals. A child list has its own set of buttons so you can change the view, filter the rows, print, and export data. See Child Lists for more information.
On a mobile device, go to the Animals tab to see a list of your animals. By default it will list all your current animals. You can use the Filter button to change the list of animals based on several criteria. See Filters for more information. You can also use the search field above the list to further reduce the number of animals in the list. When you are searching, you'll see you have the choice to search by tag or in all fields.
You can select an animal by tapping anywhere in the cell. When selected, the green circle on the left of the cell will become solid green. If an animal is selected, tapping it again will deselect it. Multiple animals can be selected by tapping each animal.
Another way of changing the selection is by using the Selection button which gives you the following choices:
Long-press on the animal if other animals may be selected and you want to make sure only the one animal is selected. This short cut can save time, especially when some of the currently selected animals are not visible without scrolling.
As you filter, search, and select animals in the list, the status information to the right of the search field will update, showing you the number of animals currently displayed and selected.
Another way of filtering and selecting animals in the list if you have an RFID reader is to use the Scan button. Please see Using and RFID Reader for more information.
If you want to change what information is displayed for each animal in the list, go to Settings > Animal List Preferences. This is explained in Changing the View.
To see an animal's history, tap the i button to the right of the animal's cell. To perform an action on animals, select one or more animals and then tap the appropriate tool bar button below the list to choose an action. Actions are explained more in the Actions topic.
